Online User Manual:  R5000-HD DVR

Preferences Dialog
This is where all user preferences and setup options are made.

File Options: There are basically two file naming options (actually three, but that involves the PVR). They can be auto-generated as Date/Time or the user can specify whatever name they choose. The "User Filespec" is entered from the menu: "File"->"Save As" or by clicking on the "Save As" button on the main dialog. You will also be prompted for it the first time you use the program and cycle this dialog.

The "Auto-Increment..." option is used to append an incremented number to the filename each time a recording is made. If this box is not checked, the file will be recorded over each time. For that reason it is highly recommended that this be option be activated, and a nag pop-up will appear whenever exiting this dialog.

Record To: Destination media type is chosen here. Options include "Disk only", Tape Only", Tape and Disk". This setting is overridden on an individual basis by PVR events.

Power Down STB: For PVR initiated events, the STB can be set to power down after the recording. This is useful for receivers that require powering down to complete software upgrades.

D-VHS as decoder: Tape decks with built-in MPEG2 decoders can be used for playback (record not engaged).

Bit Rate: The default setting of "Constant (19.392Mb/s)" should be used almost exclusively. The "Compressed (no filler pkts)" option is equivalent to "null stripping" the stream and removes any padding. This can significantly reduce the size on disk of the programs. However, not all decoders are compatible with null-stripped streams and you should use this setting with care. The other option, "Constant (23Mb/s)" is for handling special higher data-rate broadcasts.

Service / STB:  Set your Service provider and STB model here. The "Service" setting is important since there are subtle differences between the streams broadcast by the different satellite providers. The "STB Model" setting determines how the R5000-HD interfaces with your STB, mainly for remote control. This must be set correctly in order to use the PVR. You cannot select an incompatible STB (i.e. DISH6000 with DirecTV service), with the exception of mixing and matching Bell ExpressVu and EchoStar units. To control the DISH6000 receiver, the R5000-HD uses a universal address (doesn't matter what remote address the unit is programmed to respond to), but for the BELL6000 doesn't support the universal address feature. In the event that your DISH6000 also doesn't support the universal address, chose the BELL6000 model instead so you can select select your address (see "Remote Control" section).

Additional for C-Band: An edit box will appear used to enter the number of seconds to wait for dish re-positioning. This only applies to PVR initiated events and is inserted between the time when the R5000-HD sends out the satellite selection commands and channel change to the reciever.

Record As: The default setting is to record a transport stream (.ts) and should not be changed. The "av" file type is used to dump the raw data to a file and is only used for troubleshooting and testing purposes. The file cannot be played.
