Online User Manual:  R5000-HD DVR

D-VHS Transport Control & Media Player

This dialog controls both the D-VHS tape deck, if present, and the built-in Media Player. The name of the selected tape device is displayed in the group box around the transport buttons (tape devices are selected from the Main Menu: Tape->Configure).

The various DVHS Transport functions are obvious from their icons. The record button will be greyed out if the current mode is "Disk Only". The record button will start the disk recording as well if "Tape and Disk" mode is selected. Stopping a recording in this mode using the transport control only stops the D-VHS deck. A pop-up informs the user that recording to disk will continue. The main dialog Stop button can be used to stop recordings in all modes.

The Media Player can be used to play most major media file types (mpeg-2, transport stream, avi, etc). The screen icon on the right creates a live preview window of the incoming satellite program. This can be active while a recording is in progress, but only in the "Disk Only" mode. The preview window cannot be created while recording to tape.

A
shortcut menu is available by right-clicking on the Media Player  window. Of interest are the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" and "Crop" selections.

Preserve Aspect Ratio: The default setting is checked. This forces the aspect ratio of the program to be preserved no matter how the player window is sized by the user. Black areas will be automatically be added as required around the top, bottom and sides of the picture. Un-checking this lets the image always fill the window no matter how its sized.

Crop: Allows filling the view with a specific area of the picture. The crop dialog displays the current resolution of the image, in pixels, and provides edit boxes to change the the view area. This is useful to remove the infamous "grey bar" at the bottom of HD content from DirecTV. To accomplish this, set the "Bottom" boundary to 1079 which clips the grey lines from the view area.
