Playback of MPEG-4 (H.264) encoded HD content
Popular hardware solution (introduced 2007): DViCO TViX series Multimedia players (HD M-5100SH, HD M-4100SH, etc). Offer H.264 playback via component or HDMI output connection. Reports of some problems handling H.264 720p content.

Popular software/accelerated solution (Feb 2008): CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra software installed (required to turn on video card's hardware acceleration). A compatible video card with H.264 hardware acceleration (e.g. ATI HD2600PRO AGP).

At the time of this writing (Feb. 2006) hardware-based playback solutions for H.264 encoded HD content were virtually non-existent on the consumer level. For those users who would like to experiment with hardware accelerated playback, the following setup has been used with success (note: the X1600, X1800 cards may have been replaced by newer models. Check the product line for the current model supporting H.264 acceleration):
  • Ati Radeon X1600 or X1800 graphics card (x1000 avivo series). Note: the X1300 does not support HD H.264
  • Cyberlink ATI H.264 decoder for Avivo. link>
  • Microsoft Hotfix 888656. link>
  • Reference PC setup: Dell Dim 9150, 2.8Ghz Pentium D, 1GB RAM, WindowsXP Media Center, SP2. Ati RadeonX1600 PCIe w/256MB RAM. Dell 2405fpw
